What to Expect. The Hard Sell.

Simple, hard, and effective, but this type of training is not for everyone.

Barbell strength training is hard, it is uncomfortable, and some will find it difficult to stay committed long term. You will likely push yourself harder than you ever have before and you will likely push yourself harder than you ever thought you could.

Much of our training model, especially for new lifters, is inspired by Starting Strength® and the “Novice Linear Progression”. As such, we focus primarily on what we refer to as “the main barbell lifts”, the squat, the deadlift, the press and the bench press. For lifters with an interest in olympic weightlifting and power development we will also use the olympic lifts of the snatch and the clean and their variations.

Most trainees, even those with an athletic background, have never done a focused strength training program. If you are willing to put in the work during training sessions, show up consistently and take your recovery seriously, you will make progress every single session for many, many months, possibly years.

Barbell strength training is for you if you are…

  • Anyone interested in being a stronger and generally more useful human.
  • A serious athlete in your off-season and need to get stronger in preparation for your upcoming season.
  • A recreational athlete interested in improving your golf game, basketball, skiing, cycling, Jiu Jitsu, etc. Literally any serious activity will benefit from the carryover of developing general strength.
  • Someone that has never trained before and wants to get in shape.
  • Anyone interested in maintaining muscle mass, bone density, joint health and resistance to injury as you age.

Everyone starts with a two hour On-Ramp session.

This one-on-one session is designed to familiarize you with the primary movement patterns required to make the most of barbell training. Most trainees will begin with a program that looks very much like a Starting Strength® linear progression. We will squat, press and deadlift every workout. We will work toward perfecting these movement patterns and incrementally load them in order to develop useful full body strength.

Why Strength?

Because strength makes everything better.

Made popular by Crossfit, the commonly recognized general traits of physical fitness are:
Endurance
Stamina
Strength
Flexibility
Coordination
Agility
Balance
Accuracy
Power
Speed

Of these, strength is the most fundamental, and will significantly contribute to improvement in all of the other aspects of your fitness.

Why Barbells?

Because barbells are the best way to get stronger.

Formal Qualifications:

I started training with barbells in 1985, when I was 16 years old. Much of what I have learned about training and fitness has come from a wide range of experiences over the years. A four year enlistment in the United States Marine Corps taught me the importance of staying fit and strong. Also the recreational pursuit of activities, including surfing, rock climbing, trail running, cyclocross racing, mountain biking, road cycling, skiing, snowboarding, olympic weightlifting, bodybuilding, and Crossfit have all taught me valuable lessons about physical fitness, training, recovery, nutrition, and more.

That being said, below are some more “legitimate” accolades from which I have developed the tools to consider myself a Professional Strength Coach.
